Why Change Power Steering Fluid?
Power steering fluid is one of the most neglected fluids under the hood because most people don’t think about it unless there is a problem. Consumers realize that power steering systems require additional fluid occasionally, but do not realize that power steering fluid should be changed at regular intervals. Many original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) recommend changing power steering fluid due to the accumulation of wear material and other debris within the power steering system. For example, Dodge recommends changing the power steering fluid in its 2005-2008 Magnum and Charger models every 60,000 miles. In addition, power steering fluid has a service life, just like any other lubricating fluid. It is subject to temperature extremes and must combat contaminants while simultaneously fulfilling its role as a hydraulic fluid.

We often hear from customers who were told GM ATF or Dexron II is fine for power steering fluid replacement. #1 always check the vehicle's recommended specifications but the problem is if Dexron is not recommended, rack and pinion systems will almost always blow out seals!! I'm quite impressed with the performance of the AMSOIL Power Steering Fluid in both my 2002 Mini Cooper which has an electric fluid pump (runs VERY HOT!!) and the 1983 AMC Eagle which I keep outside and use almost exclusively in this -5F to 15F average weather we have late December to February. The steering is working at full potential at start up.

Research found - the issue with many European and several American rack and pinion units are that the seals used harden with lower quality products and GM Dexron II especially should be avoided unless it is the first recommendation by the manufacturer. You CAN NOT just replace any fluid with ATF. We see this suggestion in automotive forums all the time and it's a big mistake.

The AMSOIL product has a unusually low brookfield viscosity. Look at various data sheets. Look for the Brookfield Viscosity @ -40 C, max, cP ASTM D-2983 test. Notice products such as Castrol GTX have a heavy reading at 20,000 while the AMSOIL product is more fluid at 8560. Why have the unnecessary load? Use AMSOIL!
